Block paving & cobblelock

The driveway that turns heads — and one block fixes any damage

A plain black drive does nothing for the front of the house, and when tarmac cracks you're relaying the lot. Cobblelock block paving brings pattern, colour and real kerb appeal — and if a single block ever stains or sinks, you lift that one block, not the whole driveway. From €60–€110/m².

What it is

Hundreds of small blocks, locked together as one

Block paving — cobblelock to most people in Ireland — is built from individual concrete or clay pavers, bedded on sharp sand over a compacted stone base and locked tight with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints. There's no single slab to crack: the blocks share the load between them and flex slightly rather than fracturing.

That construction is also what makes it so design-friendly. You choose the block shape, the colour blend and the laying pattern — herringbone for strength under cars, stretcher bond or basketweave for a softer look — plus contrasting borders and charcoal edge courses that frame the whole drive. It's the surface for homeowners who want the front of the house to make a statement.

  • Individually repairable — swap one block, not the drive
  • Huge choice of colours, shapes and laying patterns
  • Contrasting borders and edge courses for kerb appeal
  • Permeable cobblelock options for planning-friendly drainage

How it's installed

Solid base, laid block by block

1

Excavate & base

We dig out, compact a stone sub-base to the right falls and set the edge restraints in concrete — the frame that stops blocks creeping over time.

2

Screed & lay

A sharp-sand bed is screeded flat, then blocks are laid in your chosen pattern and cut neatly around bays, gullies and the border course.

3

Sand, compact & seal

Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints, the drive is plate-compacted to lock it tight, then sealed if you wish — no deposit until you're happy.

Block paving FAQ

Your questions, answered

How much does block paving cost in Ireland?
€60–€110/m² supplied and laid. A typical 40m² two-car drive is roughly €2,400–€4,400, depending on block type, pattern and edging. See the full cost guide.
What is cobblelock?
The Irish name for interlocking concrete block paving — shaped concrete blocks bedded on sharp sand and locked together with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints so they share the load.
Can damaged blocks be replaced?
Yes — that's the big advantage. A cracked, stained or sunken block lifts out and a new one drops in, with no need to relay the whole drive the way cracked tarmac or concrete demands.
How long does block paving last?
20–30 years. Re-sanding the joints and an occasional wash and re-seal keep it tight, weed-free and looking new. Our power washing service can restore tired paving.
