Tarmac driveways

The fast, hard-wearing driveway that won't break the budget

Cracked, potholed and patched — an old driveway drags down the whole front of the house and turns into a puddle every time it rains. Tarmac fixes it in a day: a smooth, machine-laid black finish that takes the weight of family cars year after year, from €35–€65/m².

What it is

The workhorse surface Irish drives are built on

Tarmac — hot-rolled asphalt to the trade — is a blend of bitumen and graded stone, laid hot and compacted with a roller into a dense, jointless black surface. It's the surface most Irish driveways have worn for decades, and for good reason: it's quick to lay, soaks up heavy use, and costs less per square metre than almost anything else that lasts.

Prefer a rustic, country look? Tar and chip (also called chip-and-spray) sprays hot bitumen onto the base and rolls loose stone chippings into it — cheaper again, with a textured finish in a range of stone colours. Either way, a quick once-over with a pressure washer and a re-seal every few years keeps it looking sharp.

  • Best value of any bound, all-weather surface
  • Laid and driveable in a single day on most jobs
  • Can be machine-laid as an overlay on a sound base
  • Tar & chip option for a rustic, textured finish

How it's installed

Old drive out, new drive in — usually in a day

1

Dig out & base

We strip the old surface, excavate to depth and compact a stone sub-base with the correct falls so rainwater runs to your drainage, not your door.

2

Lay & roll

Hot tarmac is laid in a binder and wearing course, then roller-compacted dense and flat right up to crisp edge kerbing.

3

Cool & drive on

It firms up within hours. Park on it the same evening on most jobs — and no deposit is paid until you're happy with the finish.

Tarmac FAQ

Your questions, answered

How much does a tarmac driveway cost in Ireland?
€35–€65/m² supplied and laid. A typical 40m² two-car drive is roughly €1,400–€2,600. Tar & chip sits at the lower end; a fine machine-laid hot-rolled finish at the upper. See the full cost guide.
What's the difference between tarmac and tar & chip?
Tarmac is a smooth black hot-rolled finish. Tar & chip sprays hot bitumen and rolls loose stone chippings into it for a textured, rustic, lower-cost look in a choice of stone colours.
How often should I seal tarmac?
Every 3–4 years. Sealing keeps the surface watertight, restores the deep black colour and adds years to its life — a small job that pays for itself.
Can tarmac go over my old driveway?
If the existing tarmac or concrete base is sound and drains well, yes — a machine-laid overlay is faster and cheaper than a full dig-out.
