How much does a driveway cost in Ireland?
Getting three quotes that are €2,000 apart is normal in this trade — and confusing. The problem isn't dodgy installers, it's that no two driveways are the same. This guide gives you the real 2026 numbers for every surface, per m² and for a typical drive, so you can spot a fair quote when you see one. Prices run from €25/m² for gravel up to €110/m² for block paving.

Supplied-and-laid prices from typical Irish installers in 2026. The 40m² column is a real-world total for a standard two-car driveway. Removing an old surface adds roughly €25–€40/m² in groundwork.
| Surface | Price per m² | 40m² driveway (2 cars) | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel | €25–€50 | €1,000–€2,000 | 10–15 yrs |
| Tarmac | €35–€65 | €1,400–€2,600 | 15–25 yrs |
| Asphalt / SMA | €40–€75 | €1,600–€3,000 | 15–25 yrs |
| Concrete / imprint | €50–€90 | €2,000–€3,600 | 20–30 yrs |
| Resin-bound | €50–€100 | €2,000–€4,000 | 15–25 yrs |

€25–€50 / m²
The budget choice. Cheap, fast and permeable — but needs topping up and weeding.
Gravel cost guideTarmac
€35–€65 / m²
Hard-wearing, low-maintenance and quick to lay. Ireland's most popular driveway.

€50–€90 / m²
Pattern-imprinted concrete that mimics paving or stone — one solid, long-lasting slab.
Concrete cost guideResin-bound
€50–€100 / m²
Smooth, seamless and permeable. The premium modern look, with overlay from ~€95/m².
Resin cost guideBlock paving
€60–€110 / m²
Individual blocks in countless patterns. The longest-lasting and most repairable surface.

View asphalt drivewaysWhy your quote isn't the headline rate
The per-m² rate gets you in the right ballpark, but six things decide where you land inside that range — and they're the same six on every quote. Understanding them is how you tell a thorough installer from a cheap one.
1. Size and shape
Bigger drives cost more in total but often less per m², because mobilising the crew and machinery is a fixed cost spread over more area. Awkward shapes, curves and lots of cutting around manholes push the rate back up.
2. Base and removal
The sub-base is the part you never see and the part that decides whether your driveway lasts. Breaking out an old surface and carting it away adds roughly €25–€40/m². Where the existing base is sound, resin and asphalt can sometimes be overlaid to skip this entirely.
3. Access
Can a tipper truck and a roller get to the drive, or does everything come through a side gate by barrow? Tight access slows the job down and adds labour — one of the most common reasons two quotes differ.
4. Drainage
Irish rain is relentless. Non-permeable surfaces (tarmac, block, concrete) need a proper fall and often a channel drain or soakaway, especially if water can't legally run onto the public road. Permeable resin and gravel can avoid this. See our planning permission guide.
5. Edging and ground levels
Block kerbs, charcoal edging courses and granite setts all look the part but add cost. If your ground slopes or needs building up to meet a threshold or garage, expect extra groundwork and materials.
6. Finish and materials
A premium aggregate, a contrasting border, a stamped concrete pattern or a herringbone block layout all sit at the top of the range. The same area in the most basic finish sits at the bottom.
What you'll pay by driveway size
Total supplied-and-laid cost ranges across all surfaces, by how many cars you need to park. Small is roughly one car (~20m²), medium two cars (~40m²) and large three or more (~60m²).
| Surface | Small ~20m² | Medium ~40m² | Large ~60m² |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel | €500–€1,000 | €1,000–€2,000 | €1,500–€3,000 |
| Tarmac | €700–€1,300 | €1,400–€2,600 | €2,100–€3,900 |
| Asphalt / SMA | €800–€1,500 | €1,600–€3,000 | €2,400–€4,500 |
| Concrete / imprint | €1,000–€1,800 | €2,000–€3,600 | €3,000–€5,400 |
| Resin-bound | €1,000–€2,000 | €2,000–€4,000 | €3,000–€6,000 |
| Block paving | €1,200–€2,200 | €2,400–€4,400 | €3,600–€6,600 |
Excludes removal of an existing surface (add ~€25–€40/m²) and any drainage or major level changes.
